What's STCW? Do you require it?

The quick response would be yes, you do. "Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping" is the abbreviation for STCW. Convention that is accepted all over the world ensures that all countries achieve the same level of training. For instance, in accordance with the STCW convention, you will be required to undergo the same training whether you are a second officer from Asia or Europe.

Who uses STCW?

Anyone wishing to work on a merchant vessel over 24 metres must complete a STCW qualification/course before applying for a job. The type of course/qualification you need will largely depend on the position you are applying for and the position you will be assigned upon placement.

You must have completed at least the STCW Basic Safety course in order to apply to work on board. These courses can usually be completed within a week at designated STCW training centres - advance appointments are required.

Here are below the four basic STCW courses:

  1. Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities– This is a classroom-based course that focuses on teaching the essentials of basic safety.
  2. BASIC Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting – This firefighting course covers both practical and theoretical situations that are taught by professional firefighters.
  3. Personal Survival Techniques – A theory and practical course, you will be taught how to abandon ship using life rafts and also how to don life jackets correctly.
  4. Elementary First Aid – A theory and practical course, during this session you will be taught vital basic 1st aid and life savings skills.

Proficiency in Security Awareness - This course is not normally part of a basic STCW week; however, it is a compulsory course that must be completed before heading out to sea. If you book the 4 required courses listed above, your course provider will usually offer them for free. This is a half-day course that fits easily into your training week and explains how safety systems work on board.

What else you should know:

You can easily book the entire STCW Basic Safety course as a package and save time and money instantly. Condensed into just one week of courses; instead of taking these courses individually, this package combines all 4 or 5 modules, instantly ensuring you have all the necessary qualifications to work on board in a more efficient time frame.
