Objective:To carry out watch-keeping and specific Engine Department maintenance duties designed to contribute to safe, economical Engine and vessel operation as  directed and in compliance with Company, national and international regulations.
Reporting to: Chief Engineer
Responsibilities:
The Second Engineer is responsible for:
- Engine room watch-keeping, in accordance with the instructions of the Chief Engineer.
- Performing maintenance and repairs, in accordance with the instructions given by the Chief Engineer.
- Ensuring that safe practices during watch-keeping and repair/ maintenance work are followed, in accordance with the Company's policy and SMS requirements.
- Ensuring periodical inspections of auxiliary machinery and piping, according to the instructions of the Chief Engineer.
- Performing all necessary mechanical repairs during his work.
- Executing his duties and responsibilities, as described in Passenger Vessels By law.
- Securing the smooth operation of bunkering.
- Assisting the Chief Engineer in the proper operation, maintenance and repair of all onboard machinery and equipment.
- Co-ordinating the proper use of Engine room manpower and giving priority to necessary works; supervising the Maintenance Teams in there assigned works by the Chief Engineer.
- Monitoring Engineering staff training and development needs and bring them to the attention of the Chief Engineer for action.
- Maintaining an in-depth knowledge of the ship's Engineering status, bringing to the Chief Engineer's attention any potential or actual problems and recommending appropriate courses of action.
- Assuming the duties of Chief Engineer and take charge of the Engine Department if he is absent or indisposed.
- Setting up the main machinery and ensuring all safety and alarm systems are functional prior to the machinery being placed in UMS (Unmanned Machinery Spaces) operation.
- Keeping a full record of overhauling and repair work carried out and all gauging and boiler water tests; the cleanliness and good order of the machinery spaces and for the proper and economical use of all stores, tools and spare gear, an inventory of which he will keep.
- Drawing up of a watch list before the ship leaves port and posting in the E.C.R.
- Undertaking under the supervision of Chief Engineer, the responsibility for the correct setting of valves and lines prior to taking bunkers and or lubricants.
- Keeping all ISM files up to date and forwarding to the Ch. Engineer those forms which are necessary to be sent to the company.
- Preparing engine requisitions and forwarding them to the Ch. Engineer.
- Keeping the inventory of engine department up to date.
- He is responsible for the good function of all sanitation devices in co-operation with Ch. Officer.
- Following company's circulars.
- Following Master and Ch. Engineer standing orders.
